DATING, SLOWLY
Swiping was built for people in their twenties with time to waste. A lot of men past forty quietly went looking for something else and found it in the oldest format there is, where the woman usually writes first.
You know the evening. You downloaded the app again because a friend said it had got better. You wrote something friendly to eleven people. Two of them opened it. None of them answered. You put the phone face down and told yourself that was the last time, and you were right for about four months.
It is worth being clear about what went wrong there, because it was not you and it was not the women. It was the format. An app is built for speed: a photograph, a decision, next. That works at twenty-four, when there are two thousand people your age within five miles. It works badly at fifty-five, when what you actually want is one person you can talk to in the evening.
A letter takes ten minutes to write. Nobody writes ten minutes to forty people at once. That single fact removes almost everyone who was never serious.
Effort is the only honest signal left in dating, and letters cost effort. When one arrives, someone sat down and thought about what to say to you specifically, and you can tell inside two lines whether they did.
It is also kinder to men who are not at their best in a photograph. You may be nervous on camera and excellent on paper. On an app that is fatal. Here she knows who you are before she decides whether the picture matters.
And there is the part men do not say out loud: on LoraDate most conversations start with her letter, not yours. Whatever you are dreading about sending messages into silence, that is not the shape of this site.
The largest part of the site is Eastern Europe, and there is no mystery in that and no story about mail order brides. Ukraine, Moldova and the countries around them have far more women than men in the age brackets that matter, and a culture where a man ten or fifteen years older is unremarkable. Britain, Australia and Canada are full of men over fifty who cannot get an answer from anyone. Both sides want the same thing and are simply in the wrong countries.
It is not only Eastern Europe, though. There are women here in the United States and elsewhere, and the browse page has a country filter, so if you would rather she was closer to home you set it once and never see anybody outside it. Nobody is steering you anywhere.
A few of the profiles on LoraDate.
Every man who has looked at a site like this has the same thought, and it is a fair one: is she actually there. A photograph proves nothing, and everybody knows it.
So: there are no bots here, and the check is not an automatic scan. Every woman whose profile appears on LoraDate has recorded a video holding her identity documents, and a moderator, an actual person on our team, has confirmed that the woman in the video, the woman on the document and the woman in the photographs are the same human being, and that she is over eighteen. A profile that fails is never published. Not hidden, not shown less often. Never published.
One more, because it is the opposite of everywhere else you have tried. Plenty of these sites quietly cut words out of your own message, so that carrying on always costs you something. What you write is what she reads. We do not touch a line of it.
If you have been meaning to have a proper conversation with someone for about two years now, this is the format that was built for it. It costs nothing to look, the first letters are already paid for, and you will know inside a week whether it suits you. That is a cheaper way to find out than another four months of telling yourself it was the last time.
Enough coins to write your first letters without paying anything. Register now and we will keep it topped up: every week we add more, free of charge, so you can carry on writing without buying anything. Confirm your email and the weekly top-up is on.
